Kapi'olani wa'a

in collaboration with Derek Kawiti/Smithsonian Institute/Tuia 250

In collaboration with Derek Kawiti, the Smithsonian Institute and Tuia 250 commemorations, this projectinvolved 3D printing a 1:1 scale replica of the Kapi’olani Wa’a housed in the archives of the Smithsonian Institute. This 230 year old artifact was utilized to showcase the potential for large scale 3D printing of traditionally carved vessels, as part of the Rātā Waka Symposium in Nov 2019. The object itself highlighted how new developments in large-scale 3D printing can allow audiences to engage with an artifact that would otherwise not be accessible to touch and close examination, critically assessing the role of digital fabrication as a tool for communication and understanding of heritage artifacts.
